Credit & Debt

Your credit profile is a price list. It quietly sets the rate on your mortgage, your car, your insurance premium in many states, and sometimes whether you get the tenancy at all. This desk treats it as an asset to be managed deliberately — and treats debt payoff as an optimisation problem with a correct answer.

The order that saves the most money

Credit and debt are the same system viewed from two sides. Fixing the profile lowers the rate; lowering the rate accelerates the payoff.

  1. Pull all reports and dispute errorsA meaningful share of files contain an error material enough to move a score band. This step is free and often the largest single gain.
  2. Cut reported utilisationThe fastest legitimate lever available. Timing your payment before the statement date can move a score within one cycle.
  3. Sequence the payoffHighest rate first minimises cost; smallest balance first sustains momentum. Model the difference before choosing a philosophy.
  4. Then borrow, or refinanceRate tiers move in real increments. Applying before the profile is optimised locks in a worse price for years.

Utilisation resets monthly

Unlike payment history, it has no memory. A high balance this month can be undone next month — which makes it the fastest lever you own.

Closing cards usually hurts

It shortens average account age and removes available credit, raising utilisation on everything that remains. Pay down; think hard before closing.

Rate beats emotion

Above roughly 8% interest, repayment reliably beats investing. Below 5%, it usually does not. The middle is where preference legitimately decides.
