Finance glossary

Jargon is a pricing strategy. Terms that could be explained in a sentence are kept opaque because confusion is profitable at the point of sale. Every definition here is written to be understood the first time, and links to the guide where the term actually matters.

How to use it

Definitions with consequences attached

A definition that tells you what a word means but not why it matters is only half useful. Where a term changes a decision, the entry says so and links to the analysis.

  • Filter by desk to study a vocabulary in one sitting before reading the cluster.
  • Search across definitions, not just titles — useful when you half-remember a concept but not its name.
  • Follow the guide link where one exists; the term is used in context there.
  • Link directly to a term — every entry has its own anchor id.

Watch for these three

Expense ratio, own-occupation and reasonable compensation. Each is a short phrase that quietly determines a large financial outcome.
